Before

After- Modgrass on Permaflex

Modgrass Sports Surfaces is in the unique position in Victoria to provide Tennis Court Conversions using the acclaimed Permaflex Process.

Before a red porous/granitic tennis court can be surfaced with Modgrass, it should be stabilised.

Ideally this is done by adding an engineered Permaflex layer to the top of the existing gravel. Permaflex is porous. The tennis court will still have vertical drainage. It can continue to utilise the existing herringbone drainage system in its sub-base.

As our model shows, every layer beneath the (perforated) Modgrass is porous. This greatly facilitates the court's drainage capability...

Conversion to Permaflex Sports Base

Pull up old tennis lines. Laser-grade the court area. Install pine edging if necessary, or use existing brick edging. Spread top rock, vibrate, and roll to compaction. Laser-grade to correct the levels and falls. Hand trim. Spray with stabilising Permaflex hardener chemicals to the required specifications. Tennis Australia approved.

The porous Permaflex layer will complement the underlying herringbone drainage system in the original tennis court. It will accelerate surface drainage after rain.

Tennis Modgrass

Modgrass is manufactured in Australia using 'Tapex' Australian-made polypropylene yarn certified to ISO 9002 - a guarantee of quality. Tennis Modgrass is tufted 3.72m wide, and is pre-shrunk. It comes in an attractive 'Gum-Tree Green', and contains extra colorant and UV stabilisers to ensure low glare and long colour life.

"Tennis 10 Plus" Modgrass with green sand
Modgrass tennis lines are permanently tufted (in white or gold) as an integral part of the tennis kit. The only lines to be cut in are the service and centre lines. This means fewer joins, especially in the play area. Seams are joined by using spirit-based, waterproof adhesive, and the Modgrass is infilled with three layers of foundry-dried sand. Each layer of sand is broomed in mechanically.

We always return to give the court a follow-up groom several weeks after installation. This allows time for the sand to effectively settle down into the pile before we adjust the final level.

Sand Options:

19mm Tennis Modgrass and other multi-sports grasses are infilled with foundry-dried sand. White sand is the standard, but an optional top 1/3 or top 2/3 of green sand is aesthetically very attractive and eliminates glare. It does not, however, change the performance of the surface.

Advantages of a Modgrass Surface

  • Low maintenance - no bagging, watering or line cleaning
  • Range to suit all budgets
  • Minimal radiant heat and glare during summer
  • Aesthetically appealing - cool 'gum-tree' green colour
